Environmental Health Core determines the effects of the environment on causing cancers to arise. Cancers arise because of changes to DNA. One way that this can occur is through harmful compounds in our environment. The University of Windsor is a leader in environmental research. We are using or expertise in environmental monitoring to predict areas that are hotspots for specific cancers and to determine which combinations of compounds have the biggest impact on causing new cancers to form. Our goals are to understand the most harmful combinations of chemicals in our environment and what these do to our DNA and our cells; and to make changes in policy to protect our community and prevent specific cancers from arising.
